Well, the most commonly used one (among the smaller crowd) is obviously MySQL.

MSSQL & Oracle are used by big companies.

Well it has to be MySQL really - many major CMSs use it, although most are beginning to branch out now, and it is a favourite amongst PHP developers.

Coupled with the fact it is free, no contest for most open source applications.

It would depend on the preference of the programmer. Most PHP programmers love MySql yet ASP and .NET programmers swear by MS SQL 2000. SQL 2000 does not have to be expensive if you use your web hosts shared SQL server. For example, at 1PlanHost.com we offer it as an option for only $35 extra per year for a 50Mb database account. SQL 2000 compacts data very efficiently so 50Mb can hold a huge amount of data. In most cases you will need a copy of MS SQL Enterprise Manager in order to manage your SQL database. It is a free tool inside of SQL 2000 so if you have SQL 2000 trial, it does not matter once the trial date is reached because the tools usually do not expire when the trial does.

Best Wishes for a .Net Success!
