iTunes Buissness Model. Fad or not ???

iTunes Model: The media moguls no longer hold the reigns, the media market is driven by the customers. From a world where the customer had to buy complete albums, and pay exorbitant amounts to consumer market, where the listener is king. Paying only for the songs he wants and driving the price of songs to rock bottom levels. Wow what a respite !!!

Well, no free dinners here. The iTunes model was quite consistent and sisded with the consumer. Lately we see some songs being priced even above the market price ( for buying the cd ). Has the music moguls taken back the reigns ??? Was this a fad ???

Anyways this gives birth to a new concept. Now cnet promotes artists to put up their songs directly on their site. The listeners are encouraged to interact directly with the artists and download songs. Though this is mainly for emerging artists who are willing to disperse their music for free. This model could be extended to completely eliminate the middle man and get the listeners to buy directly from the artists.

music sales

I believe the advent of the internet and the human instinct for scavanging and bartering files online has more or less killed the music industries ability to monopolise and become filthy rich as they did before with such arrogance. Now they are panicking and even announcing major redundancies the latest being EMI with around 1500 jobs going worldwide.
The Idea of allowing the fans to go direct to the artists site could be a great answer for the artist , if any loyalty realy exists for the artist from the fan. The fan may then be encouraged to puirchase directly from the site with the incentive of direct benefits such as discounts on tickets for gigs etc and cheaper access to artist merchandising. I for one would be most pleased if this happened it would then mean that the record companies would have to find a new role in some respects as more and more artists go it alone in this way. The main reason you need a major record company to release your music is to take advantage of their existing network and also the advertising machine that their money can buy. But there are other ways to raise capital for record releases from private investors to advertising deals so the question arises " are the major record companies losing their grip " they have certainly lost the monopoly, who knows, this insecurity may even force them to study the art of common decency and manners towards their fellow human beings! Somthing that I as a struggling artist years ago found out much to my frustration was indeed missing from their abilities.

cnet seems to be promoting a new concept, a step into the future.
They are encouraging artists to publish their music on their site.
And listeners can download it. SO far this concept is only for up comming artists giving away free music. In the future Artists could put up their music on sites and let listeners download with out the middleman (music corporations).
